Short Description
Among the Wild Tribes of the Afghan Frontier is an account of the sixteen years spent working with tribes in Afghanistan. Theodore Leighton Pennell (1867-1912) was a doctor and Christian missionary. He spent much of his time living with various tribes of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he founded a missionary hospital. This fascinating volume is a record of his life’s work beginning with his moving to Bannu in 1893 to introduce the gospel to those travelling in and out of Afghanistan. He also discusses traditional medical practices, which included the nearly universal use of charms and amulets, and two widely used treatments, dzan and dam. Much of the work concerns Islamic customs and traditions, as practiced in Afghanistan and the Northwest Frontier Province. This volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in Afghanistan in the late nineteenth century.
