About the Book:
This pictorial book is an attempt to explore and document the existing Buddhist
monumental heritages of sTod Valley in Lahul which have been preserved by the
inhabitants of the area for centuries. The historical as well as socio-economic
and religious life of this region has elaborately been discussed in this book.
Emphasis have been given to the main Brug-pa Monastery of Gemur and its subsidiary
shrines and other religious structures of sTod region of the valley. It is hoped
that this book will serve as a guide for serious scholars and researchers in
carrying out detailed research in the respective field and would be found useful
to the lay visitors particularly the tourists during their visit to the valley.
About the Authors:
Chhering Dorje (1953) from Lahul, retired from the Archaeological
Survey of India as Joint Director General in 2013. While in the service, he
had the experience of working in different fields of archaeology and heritage
projects in India as well as abroad. His last work Monumental Heritage of Mandi
(2021) has been published jointly with B.M. Pande. He was the Fellow of IIAS,
Shimla (2016-17) and Tagore National Scholar, Ministry of Culture, GOI (2019-21).
Tobdan (1944) belonging to Lahul, had extensively worked on
Lahul and Spiti and adjoining regions of the hills of Himachal in the field
of history, religion, culture and folk-lore, etc. He has the credit of number
of books and articles on diverse themes published in reputed journals and magazines.
His last publication is on Ancient Lahul and Himalaya (2021). He has been associated
with the Peoples’ Linguistic Survey of India, Himachal. He was also a
member of the Governing Body of the Himachal Arts, Culture and Language Academy,
Shimla.
