Pangi is a subdivision of the Chamba district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, separated from the rest of the district by the high Pangi range. Historically, it was challenging to access Pangi from any direction, resulting in its isolation. A narrow path traversed the length of the valley, often difficult and sometimes perilous. During winter, Pangi was completely cut off from the outside world, making communication within the territory equally challenging. Much of the local culture developed in this isolated environment. The institution of praja is unique to Pangi and serves as a significant contribution to self-administration. This society is composed of a cluster of villages, with each household representing a member, overseeing various aspects of their communal activities. This work seeks to investigate the historical development of Pangi's society and culture.
